Lucas van Uden made this drawing of Gezicht op het kasteel Cantecroy in the 17th century using pen and brown ink, over graphite, on paper. Castles have always been symbols of power and prestige, and this image captures that sense of grandeur. The viewpoint is carefully chosen, emphasizing its imposing architecture and the way it dominates the surrounding landscape. Van Uden was Flemish, and so this kind of architectural drawing would have been popular among the wealthy merchant class. These were people who wanted to show off their status and affluence. The castle itself also reflects the social structures of the time, with its clear separation between the ruling elite and the rest of society. Van Uden's artistic output was prodigious, and now resides in institutional collections. Examining auction records and other sources is key to understanding how such works gain cultural and economic value.
