Polyhymnia 1535 - 1550

This is an engraving of Polyhymnia on laid paper, made by an anonymous artist. Engraving is an intaglio printmaking process. The artist would have used a tool called a burin to carve lines directly into a metal plate, in this case most likely copper, with the depth of the lines determining the darkness of the printed mark. Look closely, and you can see how the graphic quality of the engraving creates delicate tonal modulations.
