This is a cabinet card portrait of an unknown woman, captured by Charles de Latin in his studio in Borgerhout-Antwerpen. During the late 19th century, as photography became more accessible, portraiture shifted from being solely a privilege of the wealthy to a more widespread practice. Yet, gender and class dynamics still played a significant role in shaping who had the means and social standing to be photographed. Consider the woman in this portrait. Her gaze, directed just off to the side, holds a certain poise, a quiet confidence. Her high-collared lace dress and carefully styled hair speak to the societal expectations placed on women of the era to present themselves with decorum. But there is something more here, isn't there? A sense of individuality that transcends the formal constraints of the portrait. It reminds us that each person carries a story, a history, that may never be fully captured, yet deserves to be seen.
