Harmen ter Borch created "Vechtend stel," or "Fighting Couple," using pen in brown ink, sometime in the 17th century. Ter Borch lived during the Dutch Golden Age, a time of economic prosperity, and also a period defined by strict social codes. In this small drawing, we see a struggle—not just between two people, but perhaps within the confines of marriage itself. The figures are engaged in a physical altercation; one is on the ground, seemingly in defense, while the other looms above. Who has the upper hand? The emotional intensity is palpable, rendered with stark lines. This artwork departs from the idealized representations of domestic life often seen at the time. It offers a raw, unfiltered glimpse into the complexities of human relationships, challenging the conventional narratives of marital bliss. It's a reminder that behind closed doors, the dynamics of power, gender, and class can lead to conflict.
