Curatorial notes
Here we have an engraving of John Chamber, created by an anonymous artist. Chamber is depicted in luxurious robes and a fur stole, markers of wealth and status in the 16th and 17th centuries. There's something about the way he holds the gloves in his hands that suggests he's a man of thought, caught in a moment of contemplation. What thoughts occupied this man's mind? As a physician, mathematician, canon of Windsor, he was certainly a man of the times. This portrait exists within a tradition of representing powerful men. Yet, this engraving doesn't strike the heroic pose we often see. Instead, it offers a glimpse into the individual. Perhaps this work gently probes the complexities of identity, the convergence of public image and private self.
