Curatorial notes

This stereograph depicts shepherds camped outside the Damascus Gate in Jerusalem, produced anonymously, likely for commercial distribution. Photographs like these were made through a fusion of optical engineering and chemistry. The collodion process, requiring careful mixing and coating of glass plates with light-sensitive chemicals, was essential to capturing the subtle gradations of light and shadow. The sepia tones speak to the materials used - silver salts reacting to light - and the labor involved in developing and printing these images. The stereograph format allowed viewers to experience a sense of depth and realism, making faraway places seem more accessible. But consider also the social context: the marketing of exotic scenes to a Western audience. What does it mean to package and sell the everyday life and labor of shepherds as a tourist commodity? Ultimately, this object urges us to reflect on the complex intersection of photography, commerce, and cultural representation.
