This lithograph titled “Herfstlied”, was made by Huib Luns, sometime in the early 20th Century. It's got this warm, autumnal palette, a kind of brown and cream concoction. I imagine Luns layering colours, maybe starting with a light wash and building up to those deeper shadows. It looks like a scene from a dream or a play, with figures frozen in a moment of musical reverie. Those two figures with their panpipes, and the woman, gazing pensively—they're all part of this song. I think Luns was trying to capture not just what things look like, but how they feel—like that moment when summer fades into fall, and there’s this mix of nostalgia and anticipation in the air. The way the figures blend with the trees...it's kind of mysterious, right? It reminds me of other painters who were playing with symbolism and mood, trying to find a way to express something beyond the surface of things. Painting becomes a way of thinking, a way of feeling, a way of making sense of the world.
