Curatorial notes
This sheet with flowers and fruits was created by Johann Michael Munck using a printing technique. The paper support acts as a receptive field for the colorful blooms and fruits that dance across its surface, through the application of dyes or inks. The choice of colors gives the work its unique aesthetic character. Munck probably used a woodblock to stamp the design onto the paper. Each color would require a separate block, carefully aligned to build up the full image, like a complex dance of labor. This hints at the work involved in producing these repeating patterns. The result is not just a decorative surface, but also a testament to human skill. By considering the materials, the making process, and the broader context, we get a richer understanding of the artwork’s layered meanings, challenging any rigid separation between fine art and design.
