Guido Molinari made this untitled painting with what looks like oil on canvas. Molinari throws down these strokes of red, yellow, green, blue and white, with a process-led approach to making. I’m thinking about colour here as an intuitive experience. It’s all about the stuff of painting, the materiality of it. There’s a thickness to the paint that almost feels sculptural. Look closely, and you can see the marks left by the brush, each one a record of a physical gesture. My eye keeps getting drawn back to the splash of white in the lower center. It’s like a burst of light, and this small area seems to hold the key to the whole painting, almost like a visual grounding point. Molinari’s got echoes of early Mondrian in him; there’s an echo of Matisse’s Fauvist landscapes. It's like they’re all part of one big, ongoing chat about seeing, feeling, and making. Ultimately, this painting is about letting go of fixed meanings and embracing the endless possibilities of art.
