This bronze Commemorative Medal, whose creator was Alexandre Georges Geefs, presents two distinct faces, each offering a study in contrast and form. The first side portrays a somber profile of Leopold Premier Roi des Belges, sharply defined with incised lines and a stately presence. The smoothness of the bronze contrasts with the detailed rendering of his features. Turning to the other side, a winged figure—an allegorical representation of liberty—soars above a landscape dotted with stylized flora. The texture here is more complex, with a play of light and shadow across the figure’s body and wings. Semiotically, the figure destabilizes the fixed idea of authority embodied on the opposite side. The medal invites a comparison between earthly rule and the aspiration to freedom. The medal’s circular form, a contained space, challenges the unbounded nature of the themes it presents. It is a study in contained energy, where the tension between form and concept creates a resonant cultural and philosophical statement.
