Piero Dorazio made Apex with paint, but when and where exactly I don’t know. What strikes me first is the way these lines radiate out, a whole spectrum of color emerging from one point like some kind of optical event. The texture is so interesting. Each line isn't just a solid block of color; it's made up of these tiny, almost scribbled marks, like he’s dragged the brush across the surface, or maybe even used a comb. You can almost feel the rhythm of his hand, the physicality of the paint. It's not about hiding the process, it’s about revealing it. I’m thinking about the lower right corner of the work where the lighter lines seem to fade into the blue background. These lines, with their raw edges, remind me of Sol LeWitt and his interest in systematic permutations. But where LeWitt felt cool and rational, Dorazio feels warmer, more human. It’s all about feeling your way through the process.
