Editor: This print by Michael Rothenstein shows four images of a woman in a bikini, shot by her husband in 1970. The stark contrast and fragmented presentation give it a disconcerting feel. What is your reading of this work? Curator: Considering the social context of the 1970s, this piece raises interesting questions about the gaze, power dynamics, and the representation of women. Does the fact that these images were 'shot by her husband' change how we interpret the imagery? Editor: It definitely adds a layer of complexity. It makes you wonder about the relationship between the artist, the subject, and the viewer. Curator: Exactly. The act of photographing, especially within personal relationships, can be both intimate and exploitative. It's a powerful comment on the politics of seeing. Editor: I hadn’t thought about it that way. Thanks for pointing that out.
