Theo van Hoytema created this order card for ‘Owl’s Luck, a Fairy Tale’, using printmaking techniques. Hoytema was an artist who found himself deeply connected to nature, a sentiment which defined much of his artistic output. In this print, we see two owls nestled together against a night sky. Owls often symbolize wisdom and mystery, but here, against the backdrop of a children's story, they take on a softer, more whimsical air. Hoytema's choice of owls perhaps reflects an attempt to tap into the rich vein of folklore. The card served the practical purpose of ordering Hoytema's illustrated book. Hoytema's work reveals an interest in creating art that was accessible and spoke to the everyday experiences of his audience. His sensitivity is apparent as you consider the role of art in making connections and sharing stories.
