Carel Adolph Lion Cachet made this drawing of a figure in what they thought was ‘oriental’ clothing, maybe a kimono, using graphite on paper. Look at how the lines define the form of the figure – you can see the weight of the material in the folds and the way the artist has described the fall of the cloth. I can imagine Lion Cachet rapidly sketching, trying to capture the essence of the figure with as few marks as possible. The economy of the lines adds to the feeling of movement; a sense of a fleeting moment. It’s interesting to consider how artists like Lion Cachet engaged with and interpreted cultures and aesthetics different from their own. There's a whole history of artists borrowing ideas from each other, across time and place. It’s all part of the big conversation that artists have been having for centuries, inspiring one another, pushing boundaries, and seeing the world in new ways.
