Erich Wichmann made this small abstract composition using pencil, and it's a testament to the power of simplicity. The mark-making here is really direct; you can see how the pencil moves and creates different tonal variations across the work. The material aspect of this piece is really interesting because it uses the humble pencil to create something so atmospheric. The surface of the paper seems to have a bit of texture to it, and the pencil strokes catch on that texture, creating a kind of depth and movement. I see a central area of dense, almost velvety darkness, from which lighter, wispy lines radiate outwards. This reminds me of a kind of energy, or perhaps the feeling of something both chaotic and beautiful. Wichmann was part of the Dutch avant-garde, and this abstract approach feels consistent with his broader exploration of modernism. It also reminds me of some of the abstract expressionists, like Franz Kline, who used bold, gestural marks to convey emotion. Ultimately, art's about embracing ambiguity and exploring different perspectives, and this drawing really invites you to do just that.
