Edouard Baldus captured "The Floods of 1856, Avignon" using photography, a medium still relatively new at the time. The photograph presents a muted, almost monochromatic palette, dominated by horizontal bands of water, land, and sky, creating a layered composition. The eye is drawn across the reflective surface of the water, punctuated by submerged trees that act as vertical interruptions. Baldus's choice to document this natural disaster is fascinating. The photograph acts as a document and something more. The straight, sharp horizon line and the detail in the buildings create structure, but these are destabilized by the flooded landscape. The semiotic interplay between the built environment and the natural world prompts us to question the control we believe we have over our surroundings, especially when confronted by nature's overwhelming power. In this work, Baldus uses the formal qualities of photography not only to record an event but to explore the relationship between human structures and the unpredictable forces of nature.
