This red chalk manner print of a reclining Venus with Amor and Anteros was conceived by François Boucher and engraved by Gilles Demarteau. The ochre monochrome lends the image a warm sensuality and depth. The composition is arranged in a gentle diagonal, with soft lines defining the contours of Venus and the cherubs. Demarteau uses hatching and cross-hatching to build up tone and volume, giving the figures a sculptural quality. The texture created by the chalk manner technique adds a tactile dimension, inviting the viewer to engage with the surface. The figures embody an idealized beauty that reflects the Rococo period's emphasis on pleasure. Here, the classical subject matter is reinterpreted through a distinctly French lens, updating traditional allegories. The composition is framed and grounded with decorative cartouches, and is an interplay between classical form and the decorative aesthetics of the 18th century. It questions fixed meanings and engages with new ways of thinking about perception.
