This fashion plate, “Art – Goût – Beauté”, was created by an anonymous artist in January 1924, probably as a print. Look at the two figures, all slender lines and subtle curves against a starry night. I’m thinking of the artist, maybe in a small studio, carefully considering each colour, each line, trying to capture a moment of elegance. The one on the left, in a ruby red dress, feels bold and modern. There’s a calmness to the composition, a sense of stillness. It reminds me of other artists who, like this one, are thinking through the act of painting itself. It makes me wonder about the conversations they might have had, across time and space, about colour, about form, about how to capture a feeling on paper. Painting is, after all, a conversation, a constant exchange of ideas. And here, in this simple image, I feel a connection to that ongoing dialogue.
