Carolina Onnen assembled this album page with photographs of Loentje en Frank Furnée and an unknown woman in Venice. The monochromatic tonality, along with the snapshots’ intimate scale, suggests a personal, process-oriented approach. The texture of the photographs, aged and slightly faded, gives them an almost palpable quality. Look closely at the photograph of the three figures seated on the steps. The contrast between the dark shadows and the highlights on their faces creates a play of light and shadow that is both intimate and mysterious. Like much folk art, or the work of someone like Joseph Cornell, Onnen offers us an aesthetic project of collecting, arranging, and archiving. The work invites us to reflect on the nature of memory, representation, and the passage of time. Just as our memories are fragmented and layered, so too is this artwork, inviting multiple interpretations and meanings.
