Curatorial notes

Editor: Here we have Leon Zack’s ‘Painting’ from the Tate collection. Its dark palette is punctuated by striking whites and reds. How might we interpret this work through its materiality? Curator: Consider the visible brushstrokes and the texture of the paint itself. Zack's application of pigment builds a surface that invites us to contemplate the labor involved, the physical act of creation. What does the impasto suggest to you? Editor: That the process was quite physical, a layering of intention. This perspective shifts my focus from mere representation to the making of the art. Curator: Exactly! And by extension, where was this created, and for whom? These are important questions, as is Zack's access to materials. Considering these aspects changes the narrative.
