This is "Portrait of woman, from the Novelties series (N228, Type 2)" a lithograph issued by Kinney Bros., sometime in the late 19th century. These cards were collected and traded, but they also functioned as advertisements, slipping into cigarette packs during a time of rapid industrialization and expanding consumer culture. This particular card reflects the period’s fascination with idealized femininity and beauty. Notice the subject's soft features, fair skin, and gentle gaze. She's portrayed in a classical style, reminiscent of ancient Greek or Roman figures, which speaks to a desire to elevate and ennoble her image. Yet, there's something disquieting about this mass-produced image of a woman, packaged with a product known to be harmful. It reminds us of the complex ways in which women’s images have been commodified and used to sell products, often reinforcing narrow standards of beauty and desirability. This card invites us to reflect on the ever-changing, yet persistent, dynamics of gender, commerce, and representation.
