Edward Corbett created this painting, Untitled (Black Painting), which is rendered in shades of black and white. Corbett was a part of the Abstract Expressionist movement, a post-World War II art movement which held at its core themes of trauma, anxiety, and identity. Looking at this work, we can’t help but think about this historical context, and also Corbett’s personal history. After serving in the military, he had initially pursued studies in the sciences before he found his way to art. The emotional weight of that moment in history is palpable in the painting’s stark contrast between light and shadow. In its monochromatic palette, the painting evokes a sense of starkness. Without the distraction of color, the viewer confronts the raw essence of form and texture. The Abstract Expressionists shifted the focus of art from external representation to internal emotional states. This piece reflects their focus on the subjective experience and the power of art to convey complex emotions.
