Minna Citron created "As Tom Comes Home Again" in 1950 using etching. The composition, a horizontal panorama, is dominated by a dark, atmospheric background against which several dynamic, white figures leap and bound. These forms, reminiscent of animals or mythical creatures, evoke a sense of playful motion. Citron's use of etching creates a textured surface, with fine lines that define the contours and add depth. The contrast between the light figures and dark backdrop creates a stark, symbolic interplay. This work suggests a deeper narrative, perhaps exploring themes of homecoming or transformation, the figures embody a sense of freedom and energy. The print challenges fixed meanings, inviting viewers to engage with its semiotic system and construct their own interpretations of its symbolic figures and their implied relationships.
