Giorgio Sommer created this albumen print of the Restanten van het Casa di Pansa te Pompeï in Italy, sometime between 1860 and 1890. Sommer was a German photographer who worked primarily in Italy, a popular destination at the time for wealthy Europeans on the Grand Tour. This photograph captures the haunting beauty of the ruins of Pompeii, a city frozen in time by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. While seemingly objective, Sommer's photographs participated in a broader European fascination with antiquity and the picturesque. The ruins themselves became symbols of lost civilizations and served as poignant reminders of the transience of human endeavors. They also reflect the beginnings of archeology and the cultural appropriation of ancient cultures. The sepia tones and the stark contrast between light and shadow evoke a sense of melancholy and reflection. The photograph invites us to contemplate the lives of those who once inhabited this space and the forces of nature that ultimately consumed it. Ultimately, Sommer's photograph acts as a mirror reflecting the viewer's own place in the grand sweep of history.
