Curatorial notes
Charles Le Brun created this drawing, ‘Scène uit de Romeinse geschiedenis’, with pen and brown ink. The sepia tones and meticulously cross-hatched lines construct a dynamic historical tableau. The grid-like underdrawing is visible and disrupts the illusion of depth, flattening the composition. The eye is drawn to the clustered figures at the center of the drawing; their gestures and interactions weave a complex network of gazes and power dynamics. Le Brun’s use of linear perspective and the arrangement of figures within the grid invites us to contemplate the underlying structures of representation itself. The drawing becomes a study of spatial organization, and the semiotic interplay between the figures within the plane. The visible structure of the grid suggests a deconstruction of pictorial space, where the artwork invites ongoing interpretation and re-interpretation.
