This photographic print of Lake Stymphalos, was produced by Frédéric Boissonnas at an unknown date. Looking at this image, I can imagine Boissonnas standing there, squinting in the sun, composing the image, and adjusting his camera settings, waiting for the perfect moment to capture the scene. The image seems to hover between being almost there, and dissolving. See how the light mutes the color, creating soft, almost indistinct edges? There's a real stillness in the composition, with the horizon line sitting comfortably in the center, grounding the composition, allowing the surrounding hills to recede into the distance. It's as if Boissonnas wanted to capture a sense of timelessness and tranquility, inviting us to pause and contemplate the beauty of the natural world. Painters and photographers, they are all in an ongoing conversation, and exchange of ideas across time, inspiring one another’s creativity, don't you think?
