Carel Adolph Lion Cachet made this design for a rug using ink on paper. It’s all about the push and pull of black marks on a pale ground. I love seeing the grid underneath – the graph paper. It shows the artmaking process and reminds me of weaving. The composition is so alive, with dense areas contrasting to more open, sparse areas. The inky marks are a mix of hard-edged geometric shapes and free-flowing, organic forms. Look at those dark swirls on the right side. They almost seem to dance across the surface, creating a sense of movement and energy. This piece reminds me of Hilma af Klint’s early, more diagrammatic works, where she used geometric shapes and symbols to map out spiritual dimensions. Like Klint, Cachet embraced abstraction. It’s all about seeing the world in a new way.
