Albert Flamen created this etching, "Goundels on a riverbank," sometime in the 17th century. This seemingly simple image of fish resting on a riverbank invites us to reflect on the relationship between nature and humanity during a period of significant transformation. In the 17th century, the Dutch Republic experienced a Golden Age marked by economic prosperity, scientific advancements, and artistic innovation. Yet, this prosperity was intertwined with the exploitation of natural resources and the growth of colonial expansion. Flamen’s detailed portrayal of the fish contrasts with the blurred background, perhaps inviting viewers to consider their place within this changing world. The image prompts us to consider our own place in the natural world. What do we take? What do we give back? How do we value the resources around us?
