This oil painting was made in 1964 by the Dutch artist Karel Appel, whose raw, spontaneous style emerged from the CoBrA group after the Second World War. The CoBrA artists believed in a fresh, experimental approach, breaking free from academic traditions. Appel's bold colours and energetic brushstrokes reject conventional representation, seeking a more primal, emotional expression. This was a period of rebuilding and re-evaluating values across Europe. Appel, like his CoBrA colleagues, questioned established norms and embraced a more instinctive, even childlike, way of making art. Consider the context of post-war Europe. Artists sought new languages to express a world irrevocably changed. We can research manifestos, exhibition reviews, and the artists' own writings to deepen our understanding. Art like this reminds us that its meaning is always tied to the society and institutions that shape it.
