This photograph captures Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal in Amsterdam, near the post office and the back of the Palace on the Dam; we don’t know who made it, and that’s alright. The muted sepia tones create this great atmosphere of old-world charm, like a memory fading at the edges. It's interesting how the photographer uses light and shadow to define the architectural details and the lush trees lining the canal. The stillness of the scene feels almost dreamlike, with the figures on the street seeming frozen in time. Look at the texture in the trees and the building in the background, the softness of the photograph makes it seem like a drawing. It reminds me of other photographs by Eugène Atget. Both artists share a similar sensibility to the everyday, finding beauty in the mundane. Maybe that’s enough, just looking. It’s all there.
