These elegant whale oil lamps were made by Thomas Cains, an American glass manufacturer. During the 19th century whale oil was a common source of illumination, derived from the blubber of whales. While these lamps provided light, they also represent a complex intersection of industry, environment, and ethics. The demand for whale oil fueled a booming whaling industry, which had devastating consequences for whale populations and marine ecosystems. But the industry also relied heavily on the labor of diverse groups of people. The work was dangerous and exploitative and often involved men from marginalized communities, including African Americans and Indigenous peoples, who faced discrimination and harsh conditions. These lamps remind us to consider the social and environmental implications of our choices, and the human cost of progress.
