Niels Skovgaard made this etching, *Flaget hejses*, in Denmark, but when exactly is a mystery, making it even more interesting. I can imagine Skovgaard working on this small metal plate with his etching needle, pushing and pulling, feeling the resistance of the metal as he creates each tiny line. The scene is a group of children, peering through a window. The composition has a beautiful awkwardness, with the children grouped together. It’s a universal scene, one that speaks to the joy of anticipation, of watching and waiting for something exciting to happen. There is something really lovely about how this work captures a sense of children's togetherness, their curiosity, and their shared experience. Skovgaard's work is a reminder that art doesn't always have to be grand or monumental to be meaningful. It can be small, intimate, and deeply personal, offering us a glimpse into the artist's world and our own.
