Pieter van Loon made this drawing of a seated woman with a parrot in a cage in January 1843. The woman is sitting in a grand chair looking at a parrot in a cage. Van Loon was working in the Netherlands at a time when Dutch art was looking back to the Golden Age for inspiration. But there was also increasing social awareness and debate around issues such as slavery and social inequality. This drawing may seem like a simple domestic scene, but we can see the influence of these social currents in the symbolism of the caged bird. The parrot, an exotic creature, is confined to a small space, its freedom restricted. The woman, though seemingly free, is also confined to the domestic sphere, her life circumscribed by societal expectations. Is the artist critiquing these norms? To understand this drawing fully, we might research the artist's background, read contemporary social commentary, and compare this work to other images of women and animals from the period. In doing so, we can better understand the artwork as something that is contingent on social and institutional context.
