This is a print made in 1913 by George Barbier, probably using some kind of stencil process with added hand-colouring. The artist's hand has been mediated, but you can still sense the artist finding their way. I like the overall composition of the figure in front of a stylised door or window. The Art Deco vibe is pretty strong here, and the design is so striking, a really interesting conversation between geometric shapes and linear patterns. I wonder what it was like to create this image? How did he decide on the colour scheme, and what kind of conversations was he having with other designers and illustrators at the time? These things never happen in isolation, right? It's an ongoing conversation and exchange of ideas across time, with artists responding to each other's work. This little image is part of that dance.
