Octav Angheluta painted this portrait of Ivan Lipoveanul with oils. It is a dark and somewhat somber piece, with browns, oranges, and yellows creating a heavy, earthy palette. The artist must have built this image layer by layer. I imagine him starting with a general idea, blocking out the forms, and then slowly refining the details. You can see the evidence of his hand in the brushstrokes, the way the paint is applied in thick, textured strokes. The texture makes the painting come alive. It’s almost like you can feel the weight of the paint, the artist’s presence. I wonder what it was like to paint Ivan Lipoveanul. Was he a friend, a stranger, or a hired model? I can only imagine. Maybe Angheluta was interested in capturing the man’s character, or perhaps he was simply drawn to the interesting shapes and textures of his face. Whatever the case, he succeeded in creating a compelling portrait. It reminds me of the work of other painters who are drawn to portraiture, such as Van Gogh and Paula Modersohn-Becker. Artists are always in dialogue with each other, exchanging ideas and inspiring one another.
