This vase was made by Dedham Pottery, sometime between 1895 and 1943. I’m really drawn to the way the colors drip and blend – a kind of controlled accident, don't you think? I can almost picture the potter experimenting, letting the glaze run and pool, surrendering some control to the materials. I imagine that in the studio, the potter chose a palette that feels earthy and organic. I can see the hand of the artist in those drips, the subtle variations in texture. It reminds me of Helen Frankenthaler and her soak-stain method of painting. There’s a real conversation happening here, across time and materials. This vase captures the spirit of experimentation and discovery that makes art so alive!
