This print, called "Vlakken met boswilgtakken, sleedoorntakken en pauwenveren", which translates to "Planes with forest willow branches, blackthorn branches and peacock feathers," is made from natural specimens. The anonymous artist has placed the natural ephemera directly onto photographic paper, using what is called the photogram process. These specimens range from sprigs of leaves to peacock feathers. Each item is carefully arranged on the page. We can clearly see the texture of the branches and even the fine barbs of the feathers. This print demonstrates a fascination with the natural world and a desire to capture its intricate details. The photogram process allowed the artist to record these details with remarkable accuracy, preserving the specimens' delicate forms. In considering the work, it becomes clear that this is a labor-intensive project, especially considering the fragility of the selected materials. By focusing on the materials and making, we can appreciate the artist's effort to immortalize the beauty of nature through a process that combines art and science.
