Klaas Kleiterp made this portrait of Tiny Kleiterp as a toddler in a package with three-quarter sleeves and pants. It is monochrome, but there are patterns in the fabric of her clothes. Look at the way the light falls on her outfit – it really makes the fabric look silky. The texture in this image is amazing; you can almost feel the softness of her hair and the crispness of her clothes. The way the light is captured gives everything a dreamy, timeless quality. The shadows around her feet ground her in the landscape. Her face is so clear and detailed, but the background is blurred. This reminds me of the early work of Gerhard Richter, who used photographs as source material for paintings, blurring them in such a way to create a sense of distance and mystery. Artists are always looking back, finding new ways to see the old. It's all about keeping the conversation going.
