Niels Larsen Stevns made this study of an eagle with graphite on paper. I can see it there, this form hovering on the page. Imagine Stevns with his sketchbook, quickly trying to capture the essence of the bird. Was it in flight, or perched, a moment of stillness amidst movement? The lines are so light, as if the image might take flight again any moment. You know when you are drawing, and you're just trying to get a feeling down? He is doing that. These rapid, searching strokes remind me of Cy Twombly's sketches. Both artists share an interest in distilling a subject down to its most essential form through line. And that's what it is all about, isn't it? The conversation between artists across time, each inspiring the other to see and feel the world anew.
