Nicolaes Cornelisz. Witsen created this print, "Skaters by a Wooden Bridge," capturing a slice of Dutch life during the Golden Age. Witsen, born in 1641, was deeply embedded in Amsterdam’s elite, later becoming its mayor. Here, the frozen landscape serves as a stage for human activity, blending social classes in a shared experience of winter leisure. But note the stark contrast of those who can afford leisure, with the smoke billowing from a distant building reminding us of industry and labor. Witsen’s detailed etching presents a seemingly idyllic scene, yet it also speaks to the economic disparities subtly woven into the fabric of 17th-century Dutch society. It invites us to consider whose stories are told and whose are left in the shadows.
