Curator: This is "Let's go! My young friend, a good handshake . . .", by Honoré Daumier. Editor: It's funny how grotesque he's made these figures, all spindly legs and huge noses! Curator: Daumier was, of course, a master of caricature, and he used his art to critique French society. This piece, like many of his works, likely takes aim at the pretenses of the bourgeoisie. Editor: Absolutely, the fellow on the left looks like he's about to be eaten alive. He's leaning so far forward, positively quivering! Curator: It’s a commentary on power, and how these social interactions often mask underlying inequalities. Editor: Well, I know whose hand I wouldn't want to shake first. Curator: Indeed, Daumier's insight into human nature remains relevant, doesn’t it? Editor: Even today, the handshake can be a symbol of so much more than simple greeting.
