Giulio Romano rendered "Jupiter und Juno einander anblickend, mit dem Adler auf Wolken sitzend," or "Jupiter and Juno gazing at each other, sitting on clouds with an eagle" using pen and brown ink, with brown wash over traces of black chalk. The image shows Jupiter and Juno in what seems like an intimate, but staged pose; they lock eyes while sitting on a cloud next to an eagle. In the 16th century, when Romano was working as a painter in the Vatican, mythological figures were frequently used to explore themes of power, love, and morality. But more than that, it showed the elite class, the people that were considered above others, the standard to strive towards. Juno's gesture, her hand gently resting at her chest, and Jupiter’s gaze, might speak to the complexities of relationships, even for Gods. This drawing reflects an era where art served not only aesthetic purposes but also as a medium to negotiate social norms and values. But its emotional core reminds us that even the most powerful figures are bound by the threads of human, or in this case, divine connection.
