Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki created this print, "Twelve Examples of Natural and Affected Behavior," etching it with drypoint. Here, we see a series of contrasting images. Each pair contrasts a ‘natural’ behavior with an ‘affected’ one, revealing how society can distort genuine expression. The most arresting of these symbols is the contrast between natural, unadorned human interaction and affected or theatrical interactions. Consider the gesture of touch: In the 'natural' scenes, hands are clasped simply, conveying trust. Juxtapose this with the affected scenes, where touch becomes a performance, laden with artifice and perhaps hidden motives. This contrast echoes in ancient Roman statuary, where naturalistic poses were often idealized, yet here, the ideal is subverted, critiquing the superficiality of social performance. The theatrical gesture, seen across time from ancient drama to commedia dell'arte, becomes a marker of inauthenticity. Through these recurring motifs, Chodowiecki captures the tension between our true selves and the masks we wear, inviting us to reflect on the psychological weight of social expectations, a theme that continues to resonate in our own age.
