This is an interesting one, this photograph of houses on a street corner in Morlaix, probably taken with some kind of early camera. It looks like a sepia wash, as if it's been soaked in tea. I can imagine Delizy walking the streets, maybe he was out in the sun. The way the buildings lean in together is cool, as if they're huddling to swap gossip. The light is soft, making the details look gentle and dreamy. It reminds me a little of the paintings of Gustave Caillebotte, who captured everyday life in Paris with such careful observation. You can see what's in the shade, and the light has been captured so beautifully. Even though it’s a photograph, it feels painterly, like a scene carefully composed with a brush. It makes you feel how all artists, whatever their medium, are always talking to each other, echoing and bouncing off each other's ways of seeing.
