Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer rendered this vase of flowers with delicate strokes. The bouquet bursts forth from a metallic vase embellished with lion heads and a relief of what appears to be a bacchanal scene. The lion head, a symbol of strength and courage, has appeared throughout history. From ancient Mesopotamian art to the gates of Mycenae, they are guardians and symbols of power. Similarly, the vase depicts figures engaged in celebratory revelry, echoing scenes found on ancient Greek pottery, intended to evoke feelings of abundance and joy. In Monnoyer’s composition, flowers such as the poppy evoke sleep and oblivion, while roses convey love and beauty. These symbols have traversed time, appearing in Roman frescoes and Renaissance paintings, evolving in meaning, yet consistently touching upon fundamental aspects of human experience. Like the resurfacing of dreams, this piece brings to life our collective consciousness.
