Sam Alexander created these photographs of Cape Town and Port Elizabeth that form a visual dialogue through their contrasting forms and perspectives. On the right, we see carefully framed architectural shots: the Public Library and Museum of Cape Town, and a cityscape of Port Elizabeth, viewed from a high vantage point. The library is depicted with strong geometric lines of its classical facade, lending it an air of permanence and authority. Below, the Port Elizabeth cityscape is dynamic, with the diagonal lines of the land meeting the horizontal expanse of the sea. On the left, softer, blurred impressions of the landscapes of Cape Town and Port Elizabeth encourage a consideration of how the structure of photographic representation itself shapes our understanding of place. The formal arrangement here prompts us to consider how these images function not just as records, but as constructs, which invite us to question what we see and how we interpret it.
