"Madonna del Parto, Sutri" was created in 1927, using chalk on paper, by M.C. Escher. Escher was a Dutch graphic artist, whose identity was deeply rooted in his unique perspective as a white European man navigating the early 20th century’s rapidly changing world. This drawing of a grotto near Sutri, Italy, departs from Escher’s later, more famous explorations of mathematical and spatial impossibilities. Here, he captures the emotional weight of history embedded in the physical world. The image evokes a sense of timelessness and the past. Escher’s choice of subject is particularly interesting when considered through the lens of gender and religion. The ‘Madonna del Parto’ refers to depictions of the Virgin Mary as pregnant. The grotto itself, a site of ancient pagan worship later repurposed for Christian ceremonies, underscores themes of birth, fertility, and the feminine divine. Escher presents a space where layers of cultural meaning converge, inviting contemplation on the relationships between history, spirituality, and the artistic gaze. The image is both a personal reflection on a specific place and a broader meditation on the passage of time.
