Karl Isakson made this sketch of the bastions on Christiansø, probably on location, with pencil on paper. Just look at the horizon line, so tentative! The artist is figuring it out as he goes along. I can imagine him standing there, squinting at the light, trying to capture the essence of the place. The marks are so spare, yet they suggest so much: the undulation of the land, the solid architecture, the openness of the sky. It's like he's mapping out the space, not just visually, but also emotionally. I feel like I'm standing there with him, feeling the sea breeze and the weight of history. The pencil work is light, almost like a whisper, suggesting the subtle nuances of light and shadow. It's not about precision, but about capturing a feeling, a mood. And isn’t that what drawing is all about? Karl was part of a generation of artists who were pushing the boundaries of representation, exploring new ways of seeing and feeling the world. This is an exercise in capturing the mood of a place. You can almost see the next painting emerging from these pencil lines.
