Jean Jacques de Boissieu created this etching of an ancient tower with a water mill sometime in the 18th century. The image shows a romanticized view of the French countryside. Old architecture is crumbling near a mill, with a solitary figure standing by with his goat. The scene recalls the picturesque aesthetic that was fashionable at the time. France was in the midst of the Enlightenment, where nature and reason was celebrated, but there was also a growing interest in the medieval past. Boissieu’s print may reflect a nostalgic yearning for a simpler, pre-industrial way of life. This interest in the past also led to new studies into local and national history, often supported by the state. Historians of art can look into estate records, architectural surveys, or the publications of antiquarian societies to learn more about the cultural context in which this etching was made. The image reveals much about the social values of its time.
