This is Manuel Felguérez's 'Composición', of undefined date. What first strikes the eye are the circles and squares, those primal shapes so dear to the modernists. Circles, echoing the sun and moon, have always been symbols of wholeness, of the infinite. Here, they appear as windows, portals inviting us to gaze beyond the surface. Meanwhile, the squares, emblems of stability, suggest structures, order. Together, they hint at something beyond the constraints of daily life. Consider how these shapes, once laden with cosmological significance, have been distilled into pure form. From the mandalas of the East to the rose windows of Gothic cathedrals, the circle has traversed centuries and cultures, each time imbued with new layers of meaning. Similarly, the square, found in the grid-like layouts of ancient cities and the geometric patterns of Islamic art, speaks of humanity's urge to impose order on the chaos of existence. Perhaps it is this subconscious resonance that makes the arrangement of this artwork so powerful. The geometric tension speaks to the paradox of human experience, the eternal dance between order and chaos, the finite and the infinite. The piece reflects how symbols can be transmitted across time, evolving and transforming to reflect the sensibilities of each new age.
